The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report
The Affordable Care Act represents one of the most comprehensive health care restructuring efforts since the creation of the Medicare and Medicaid programs in 1965.
A transformation of the current health care system to provide safe, high-quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care will require a paradigm shift in the way many healthcare professionals fulfill their roles. Nurses are at the forefront of this shift, and a fundamental restructuring of nursing education (before and after nurses receive their licenses) is considered to be the centerpiece of this transformation.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) completed a comprehensive study examining the need to transform the nursing profession.
