Happiness and Health: Thriving in Stressful Times
Everyone wants to be happy and healthy. By focusing on becoming happier, research suggests that we feel better and have increased energy, improved immune function, increased creativity, improved relationships, and increased productivity. Happiness leads to a healthier, longer life. Happiness and health are connected, and research now shows that one’s level of happiness can positively impact the level of a person’s health.
The goal of this presentation is to describe the multiple health benefits of being happy, explain how happiness is measured, and provide suggestions for engaging in activities that increase health and happiness. Contact us...
Inner Peace: Outer Purpose
The world is a busier and more complicated place than in the past and finding inner peace may take some time. There are innumerable sources of stress stemming from events that we cannot control. But we do have control over our reactions to these events. Unfortunately, we spend more time worrying than we do trying to gain understanding and perspective. Americans spend millions of dollars each year on self-help books. We are an anxious and worried culture. Seventy to ninety percent of visits to primary care physicians are stress related.
But you have a choice--to practice living with stress or to practice living with inner peace. You can choose to live in the present with more joy, abundance, love, harmony, kindness, happiness, wisdom, and peace. One of the most basic facts about being human is that peace is our true nature, our fundamental state of mind.
The goal of this presentation to develop an awareness of your “self” and the determinants of inner peace so that your outer purpose and passion are reflected in your life. Various methods of stress reduction are also explored. Contact us...
Place and Space—Creating Healing Environments.jpg)
Chief Seattle once said “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” Healing environments are essential to our health and the health of our planet. But what is a healing environment? Why is it important for us and for those we care for? How do we create one? Health care providers are in a powerful position and can assist clients with their healing process through the creation of healing environments—spaces that support the individual’s inner healer and utilize the environment to maximize its healing effects.
The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of healing environments, their historical evolution, and the specific elements of a healing environment including color, nature, lighting, air quality, smells, music, noise, furnishings, and way finding. Unique considerations for designing healing environments for children will be briefly discussed and the role of communication, education, and health care providers in developing healing environments will be explored. Health and the Human Spirit
John Keats once said “Health is my expected heaven.” Interesting how, even in Keat’s time, heaven and health were connected. It’s no wonder. Spirituality plays an important role in health and in healing. For many individuals, every aspect of their lives and experiences involve connections with others, with nature, and with a higher power. For many cultures, health and healing are intimately connected with spiritual practices. Healing is a spiritual process that involves the wholeness of a person.
The goal of this presentation is to explore the forms and expressions of spirituality; discuss culture and its relationship to spirituality; examine the relationship between spirituality and aging; explain spiritual interests within the health care system; describe the role of spiritual care providers in administering spiritual care; and describe the relationship between spirituality and health conditions, therapeutic interventions, and healing environments. Laughter is the Best Medicine
The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. Laughter helps us relax, decreases our stress hormones, and helps us fight infection. It can be a great workout for many of our muscles and it enhances learning. Humor (and the laughter that goes with it) is a powerful medicine and can unite us during difficult times. A healthy sense of humor helps us laugh at ourselves and look at stressful situations from a different perspective.
The goal of this presentation is to explore how humor can keep us healthy, the types of humor, the physiology of laughter, theories of humor, how humor is used as a coping technique, and ways to use humor in our personal and professional lives. Contact us...
Nutrition
: An Integrative Approach
What we eat profoundly impacts our health and well-being, yet many of us eat when we are rushed; we don’t know where our food originated; we eat toxic, irradiated, or genetically altered foods; and we eat more than we need. How can we revise our eating habits and become more conscious of what we eat, why we eat it, and how it is prepared?
The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of the role of food and health in human history. The various elements of nutrition, some of the most common types of diets, and the roles of nutraceuticals and supplements are explored. Types of toxins and the effects of irradiation, genetically altered foods, and food allergies are discussed. Finally, the role of herbs and herbalists, herb processing, how herbalists are trained, and issues facing herbal use are reviewed. Contact us...
Healthy Aging
With the population aging at a rapid rate, the number of individuals over 65 will more than double by the year 2020. Aging is a time of great opportunity and freedom! This group of individuals is redefining what it means to age by being motivated to pursue change, eliminating negative stereotypes of aging, and staying active and productive!
The goal of this presentation is to discuss healthy aging as it relates to cultural similarities and differences, nutrition, physical activity, spirituality, alternative methods of healing, lifelong learning, leisure pursuits, second and third careers, and volunteerism. Contact us...
Cultural Competence in Health Care
The culturally diverse health care populations in the United States provide health care professionals with tremendous opportunities to bridge cultural gaps, incorporate new treatments and disease prevention strategies into health care, and learn about different cultural values and cultural belief systems.
The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of specific cultural characteristics of major cultural groups in the United States; explore the relationship between language, culture, and health care; identify health beliefs and health care systems; describe elements of cultural competence; and identify specific culturally competent practices.
